Psychometric properties of the slovak version of the Parental Stress Scale during the Covid-19 pandemic
- Výskumný ústav detskej psychológie a patopsychológie, Cyprichova 42, 831 05 Bratislava, Slovensko
The issue of parental stress must be given considerable attention and therefore, it is necessary to have a simple and reliable tool to determine the current level of perceived parental stress and satisfaction, or dissatisfaction in the role of a parent. The present study dealt with the verification of selected psychometric characteristics of the Slovak version of the Parental Stress Scale (PSS) tool, originally developed by Berry and Jones (1995). PSS is one of the most used methods in this field, containing 18 items. Data collection was conducted online during the coronavirus pandemic. Data set consisted of 546 participants, especially mothers. The Slovak version of the PSS questionnaire showed a sufficiently high degree of internal consistency, Cronbach's α = 0.88 and McDonald's ω = 0.89. The confirmatory factor analysis confirmed, in the literature preferred two-factor structure of the questionnaire ((χ2(133) = 475,066; p < 0,001; χ2 / df = 3,57; RMSEA = 0,070 (90% CI 0,063-0,077); CFI = 0,951 a TLI = 0,944). The validity of the Slovak version of PSS was supported by its correlations to the scale for measuring the perceived stress PSS-10, scale of adaptation of parents to an emergency situation ŠARMS-12, as well as the well-being measuring scale WHO-5. Further links have been exhibited with fear and anxiety caused by the coronavirus.
