Necessary steps in developing a valid competency model for emergency medicine professionals

During the past few years, there has been a growing interest in competencies and competency models for healthcare professionals. However, relatively few studies have focused on the necessary competencies for emergency medical services (EMS) professionals. Moreover, there is a lack of clarity on core competencies for EMS professionals. Therefore, we provide some insight into competencies and existing competency models for EMS, inform about possible strategies for developing a competency model for EMS professionals, and consider the possible benefits and drawbacks of using particular methods. This article offers a detailed theoretical framework, sets out the benefits of the concept as well as a critique, and possible implications for EMS.
